Those who have followed my articles know that I am a corporate trainer.  My company divides the training department into external trainers, who train our clients on how to use our software and related best-practices, and internal trainers, who train our new-hires on their jobs within the company.  Usually we don't cross paths.

Another part of my job is to produce and do voice-overs for web-based training modules for both our clients as well as our employees.  My background in radio has put me in the position of being the "voice of the company" for our online presence.  Just like when I worked in radio, it has its unintended consequences.

Last week I was asked to sub for one of our internal trainers who had a family emergency.  It was an unusual request, but I'm always up for something different.  Fortunately I was quite familiar with the material since I had done the web-based training module on it just a few weeks ago.  I jumped in with both feet and discussed the material with a group of relative new-hires for about 2 hours.  It was during one of our breaks that the incident that spurred this article occured.

During the first break of the training session, when I happened to look up from my laptop, I noticed that one of the trainees was sitting there with her face beet-red.  I asked her if she'd learned anything good and she said that she had picked up a lot.  She then said, "You're the voice, arent you?"

I knew that she meant from my web modules, so I said yes with a laugh.

Her next comment was what floored me.  "I love listening to those things.  Your voice makes my panties wet."

I was stunned for a moment then laughed and said thanks.

The rest of the training session was uneventful and several people, including her, thanked me and said it was nice to finally meet one of the road warriors, as our external trainers are known.

I've already decided I'm just going to let her comment go as an awkward bit of flattery, but here's the question I put to you:  Was it flattery or sexual harassment?

When I think if the situation were reversed and a male trainee had made the comment to a female trainer that listening to her voice got him hard, there would be screams of sexual harassment and probably some comments that he should be fired, even if it was an awkward attempt at flattery.

What do you think?

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I'd just like to take a moment to give some thanks. I've been paying attention to my Google Analytics stats lately and this article as been the most popular piece that I've written in terms of pageviews and votes. It is the 2nd most popular piece in terms of comments. I certainly thank you, both those who leave comments and those who lurk.

As a follow-up, I'll mention that a client recently recognized my voice as the narrator of our training videos and was just bubbling over with enthusiasm about it, even extending an unexpected dinner invitation. I did accept the dinner invitation but resisted her efforts at flirting, including touching me in a lingering fashion several times. Yes, I'm cruel, but business is business, and business and pleasure don't mix when conflicts of interest and dollars are at stake. I will admit to being flattered by the attention, especially since my voice seems to be the catalyst of it all, but it is also a bit overwhelming and uncomfortable at times.

I would like to apologize for self-induced comment spam. On Dec. 2nd I attempted to post an update comment to my article and despite multiple attempts it never appeared in the comment thread. I subsequently submitted a bug report and got the issue resolved. Unfortunately about 8 copies of the same comment appeared in my comment thread. I have deleted the duplicates and apologize for multiple postings to your comment tracker or friends tracker.

Sexual harassment. There is a far more professional and appropriate way to say she likes your voice, and a far less sleezy way to flirt.

I am 151% certain that any man who said that a female trainers voice made him hard would have a sexual harassment charge against him.

Which is why we have a double standard and an unequal power dynamic in most workplaces. As a guy who has been sexually harassed by a female boss, I can tell you that it's handled completely differently when it's a guy bringing the accusation against a woman. While a guy who is accused of sexual harassment has to prove that he didn't do it, a guy who accuses a woman of sexual harassment has to bring overwhelming evidence that she did do it. In my case it turned out that I wasn't the only guy in the department that had been harassed, but even with that evidence our boss just got transferred to a different department. Had she been a guy, I'm certain she would have been fired on the spot.

Yeah, and the higher ups (male and female alike) probably all got a taste of her before sending her there, no doubt.
