American Airlines, the nations largest air carrier, said Wednesday that it would begin charging $15 each way for many passengers to check their first bag, eliminating a free service that passengers in the United States have come to expect during the modern jet era.
Anyone who thinks it's better for passengers to have more carry-on bags is seriously mistaken. As a frequent traveler I know that having more carry-on bags increases the amount of time required to board and deplane, which is only going to adversely affect on-time departures. It's also terribly inconvenient when people don't figure out until the last moment that their bag will not fit into the overhead compartment or in front of their feet. It would be better just to raise ticket prices or to have passengers pay for the weight of their baggage rather than the number of bags.
