Canceled Without Pity: Should Have Been Canceled

There are some shows that I love, yet if the choice were mine, I would have canceled several seasons ago. Very few tv shows really have the legs to stand up to a run of more than 3-5 seasons. In my own experience, it's around that timeframe when audiences start to drift away from a show. Here I'll list a few shows that should have already been canceled.

Monk

At first Monk was an interesting little show. The defective detective was actually worth watching. The quirks were entertaining. The mysteries were intriguing. The novelty has worn off. The character of Adrian Monk has seen no character development. Nothing substantial has changed with him from the beginning of the show to the latest episode. Like many shows that I've grown tired of, it is as if you could play 5 random shows in any order and it wouldn't matter. Sure, the sidekick has changed. The psychiatrist has changed. Nothing else has changed. The show has become formulaic.

Law & Order

To be honest, this could apply to any flavor of the show. Yes, it is still somewhat fascinating to see how the writers take a story that has been in the news and put their own L&O twist on it, but that isn't enough to sustain interest. I have watched the original show since the beginning. There have always been hints of character development but never anything worthwhile. The lives of the characters mean nothing to the overall story. If something bad happens to a character this week there won't be any mention of it in next week's show. The episodes exist in their own self-contained bottles. Even as various actors have come and gone over the years, there has never been any effort at establishing a story arc. For example, it has been hinted that Jack McCoy has slept with most of his female ADA's but this has never caused any plot complications. Surely someone could have hit him with a sexual harassment claim or someone from his past could have come back into his life. Instead, we get nothing but interchangeable shows.

ER

Yes, I know this is the final season of the show, but it should have been put to a merciful end several seasons ago. Somewhere around the 5th season it became derivative of itself. There are only so many season-ending cliff-hangers and must-see episodes that can be thrown into the mix. Unlike the other shows that I've mentioned, we did get to see some character development and the show can't entirely be watched in random order. When put up against other medical dramas though, the show is not as compelling as it once was.

So do you agree with my choices? What shows do you think should have been canceled but haven't yet been?

Which shows make your list of those that should have been canceled?

I fully agree with Monk. I stopped watching it long ago. It's formulaic -- Monk sees a crime scene, says "That's the guy," gets into a situation where he will get dirty/in a tight space/on a high building, goes after a vital clue, realizes he can only solve the crime if he can get dirty/get into a tight space/go onto a high building, valiantly overcomes his fear to get the vital clue, tells everyone how the crime was committed. Next episode, he goes back to being afraid of everything. Boring.

Prison Break. Oh, how awesome was Prison Break in its first two seasons? How much more awesome would it have been with a finite storyline? Instead, it's just more and more absurd and implausible. I stopped watching a while ago.

Lost is rapidly getting to 'Should Have Been Cancelled' status, too.

There are some shows that I love, yet if the choice were mine, I would have canceled several seasons ago.

Actually, I love Monk too - and that is why, if I had the choice - I would keep it going...

Here's why - excellent quality shows like Monk are hard to find, the quality, humor, execution, acting are all top rate and while many episodes do follow a core formula, I find something new and refreshing in each episode.  I'll say it again:  I love the show!!! - and I will not abandon it!

It is true that my husband and I have several of the recent episodes saved on our TiVo waiting for us to watch them.  However, they are set to keep permanently - or until I delete.  That is because we are saving them for the right time when we can watch one together and enjoy the quirky humor. (Kind of like saving very expensive gourmet chocolates to savor a little at a time - to make them last)

Also, I feel that there are many things that can still be done with future episodes/seasons - there are many choices and options for the writers, and I truly want to see what they come up with.  So there!  That's me sticking my tongue out at you :)

Patriciaad I can agree with most of your points but I just wish the character of Adrian Monk would grow or change in some meaningful way.  It just frustrates me that you can take most of the episodes of the show and show them in completely random order and it won't make a difference.  I just wish there would be some situation that wouldn't resolve itself neatly by the end of the episode, or even by the end of 2 episodes.  I want to see something that leaves the character irrevocably changed and would bring out some aspect of the character that we haven't seen before.  I want to see a watershed moment in the show.

You have a good point there, Division -

but the way I see it is...if they cancel it, we may never get to see that watershed moment.  For the meantime, I enjoy it kind of puttering along... it's kind of like a faithful old dog always there to comfort you when you sit on the sofa.

They have been advancing somewhat with Trudy's story line which to be honest is the only thing I care about having resolved before the show ends.

I think part of the reason they haven't been advancing him psychologically is the Moonlighting effect. Moonlighting was a quirky fun show that relied on the tension between the two lead characters. Once they finally had them get together - the show died. I think you would see the same thing with Monk. If you change him, you lose what makes the show fun.

Most shows to be honest have one or two good seasons and a lot of seasons that are just so-so if they make it pass the second season mark.

Most shows should not go 4 seasons as their story is told and they start repeating story lines with new dialog.

The BBC has the right idea with most of their shows a beginning, middle and an end that is mapped out from the start of the series.

There are some exceptions to that rule on the BBC like Torchwood and Doctor Who but for the most part with their sitcoms I have found that they abide by the unwritten rule.

ER should have been put to sleep about 4 years ago.

Give me a good Sci-fi show over the soap operas, reality, game show (except for Jeopardy, but that is not on prime-time).

I don't think that I can watch another cop drama or lame sit-com with silly sex jokes like Friends that lasted way too long.

I think I may be in a very small group.  I have never seen an entire episode of Friends from start to finish.  I've seen bits and pieces but never more than it might take to reach the next commercial break.  The show just seemed to infantile to me and certainly wasn't made with my demographic in mind.

I agree with you about the BBC shows.  The average BBC show is far better written than the average U.S. show and the characters seem to have more depth and nuance.  I was a huge fan of the UK version of The Office but the American version paled by comparison.  I am also a fan of Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Primeval, all sci-fi shows that would not get very far as U.S. productions.

I wish U.S. shows would run with a beginning, middle, and end in mind.  Instead we get stuck with shows that continue to come back year after year as long as the ratings justify it.

You would probably enjoy My Own Worst Enemy on NBC it is one of the best new shows with a strange twist that I have not seen on any show.

Primeval first episode was a disappointment but because it was/is such a critically acclaimed show I watched the second episode without much hope and discovered that it has gotten better with each episode, I haven't missed an episode as it came to be one of my favorite shows, it is a true gem of a show.

I've actually found My Own Worst Enemy to be surprisingly boring. I watched two episodes, and really expected Christian Slater to be awesome, but the hapless-nice-guy-not-kicking-ass bit is dull as all get out.

I'm also profoundly disappointed in Eleventh Hour, which I really expected to like, since Rufus Sewell is awesome. But the blonde bimbo he's got as his sidekick is a waste of space, and the show's writing is the worst I've seen since I quit watching CSI: Miami.

Life On Mars, on the other hand, is really good.

Life On Mars is a bright spot on the TV line up.

I'm looking forward to the Dollhouse as I love every thing that Joss Whedon has done on the small screen and at the movies.

Not surprisingly, it's a remake.  We should just start importing all of our TV, it seems.

A lot of my viewing these days has been shifted to History Channel, Discovery Channel, Science Channel, BBC America,  and movies that I've recorded on my TiVo.  Most of mainstream tv has left me behind.

CSI-Miami.  David Caruso has been annoying since Day 1 and the shows showing his charater (lack of) development should have been taken out to the woodshed and been put out of our miserey long ago.

I agree with your other choices too.

My favorite David Caruso scene of all time:  Officer and a Gentleman, in the dunk tank where Caruso couldn't get out of the harness-think how much better the world would hve been if Lou Gossett wasn't able to revive him!

lol ...and here I thought I'd be the only one to despise CSI Miami. David Caruso is intolerable - "Shatneresque" in his acting ability. Pausing to make some arrogant, half-baked quip before snapping on/off his sunglasses and striking a pose against the sunset. If he were a real-life person I can't imagine anyone being able to work with him.

you know, the thing is, I don't think Bill Shatner EVER took himself as seriously Caruso does-and remember that great career move, leaving NYPD Blue for fame in all those successful movies (oh wait, NONE of them were successful).

My friend Emmett refers to CSI Miami as "White Man Swings Big Dick," which pretty much sums it up.  Caruso gets to say his lines, strike a dramatic pose, and either put on or take off his sunglasses to emphasize a point.

I enjoyed SG-1 until the Ori storyline.  I felt that Stargate Atlantis was a breath of fresh air but this current (& final) season has sucked.  The series has been canceled, so why not break the mold and offer some eye-opening, compelling tv in the final season?  I want the final credits to roll while my jaw is hanging open in shock, awe, or disbelief, not while I'm scratching my head wondering why I just wasted my time watching it.

Well they might have if they had known this was the final season going in.  It was actually a bit of a surprise when it was announced that it was cancelled and put on the DVD track.

TV execs could cancel any and all reality tv shows in my book...except maybe "Man and Wife"...it's more of a relationship help type show mixed into reality...but the couple is really funny.  Stargate Atlantis can go too. And I swear, if they come up with one more "America's next best"...or "Dancing with"....or any other show that deals with America voting and people showing off a talent, I'm going to scream

Eureka had promise but lost its direction.

I don't know...I still like Eureka....something about it cracks me up..I think its all the "brilliant" people who have to rely on this "average" sheriff....

I stopped watching ER years ago.  I've never really cared for Maura Tierney.  Didn't care much for her character in Newsradio or ER.  I can't explain why.  (Maybe it's because I can't figure out how to pronounce either of her names. :-)

I agree on L&O, too.  That's another show I stopped watching a long time ago.

But then I'm on the outskirts of the scale.  I find I've just about given up on episodic TV.  The only shows I regularly catch anymore are NCIS, Earl and The Office. There's a few others (CSI, Criminal Minds) I watch if I get the chance and the time, but don't miss if I don't.

I wish more effort would be put toward developing story arcs.  They don't have to span an entire season, but let's just have 3-6 episodes where something happens that takes that span of time to tell and that makes a real difference in the lives of the characters.  Let's have some events that mold a character, that define a character, and that give us a basis for future development of that character or that explain how the character that we see today came into being.  Let's have some stories where stuff matters, where you can't show the episodes in random order because there's a story that is being told.  Let's assemble the show from jigsaw pieces fitting together so that by the end of the series we have a complete story that has been told.

Are you talking about more shows in general or a specific show?  Cause while I love arc shows, I'd miss shows that didn't have arcs.  It is nice to just sit down and watch a repeat of a show without having to be concearned with details that I've forgotten.

I read an article somewhere last week that said that many shows that could be canceled in this current season won't be canceled because of the economic downturn.  Apparently it is cheaper to keep an existing show on the air than it is to develop a new show to replace it.  For some shows I'm sure this will mean that they can actually find an audience but for others it could mean a dead cat bounce into being renewed for next season.
