On a few threads that I have participated in lately the question of how to post to a private group discussion has come up.
Groups on Newsvine are divided into two types, public and private. Private groups are divided into two types, those that are listed in the group directory and those that aren't. Newsvine groups exist to allow people with shared interests to be able to aggregate articles and seeds so that others with those same interests can easily find them and participate in them. I belong to about 40 public groups and 3 private groups, 2 of which I own and moderate.
To post an article or seed to a private group you must belong to that group. When you post your article or seed you have the option of making it viewable to the public or not. If you want that article or seed to be accessible to the public, you will need to leave the check mark in the "All of Newsvine" box which is located in the Publish To (Optional) section in addition to publishing it to your private group. The "All of Newsvine" selection creates a public discussion thread and ensures that your article/seed can be viewed by anybody who comes to Newsvine.
If you want your article/seed to only be viewable by members of your private group, you must uncheck the "All of Newsvine" box in the Publish To (Optional) section in addition to publishing it to your private group. Unchecking the "All of Newsvine" box in this instance makes your article/seed invisible to the public. Only members of the private group can see it and only members of the group can leave comments.
What if you want to start a private group discussion on an article or seed belonging to someone else? There are a couple of steps to do this. You can clip the article/seed to your private group. You will then need to click the Start New Group Discussion link. This will create a private discussion thread and you will see a padlock next to the discussion thread tab for that group. When you click on that tab you will be prompted to select the group that you want for your discussion. You then have the option at the bottom of the group list to have a public or private discussion. If you want to have a private discussion the conversation thread will only be visible to members of that group. If you create your discussion thread using this method, you also have the ability to send an email notification to members of that group to encourage them to participate in the discussion. The text of your comment will be sent in your email notification.
Whenever you are posting a comment into a private discussion thread, there will be a black bar across the bottom of your comment window with a padlock on it that says "You are posting this to a private discussion (name of group)". If you have a green bar at the bottom of your comment window, you're posting your comment to a public discussion thread. Black=private. Green=public. Knowing where you're posting your comment can save considerable embarrassment!
In any case, whenever you publish to a private group you should always add a tracking comment. The tracking comment is your own comment (usually the first comment) in your own article or seed, which will make your article/seed show up in the comment trackers of the members of that group. Your tracking comment will cause your article/seed to appear with the group name in parentheses in members' trackers.
I hope this helps and feel free to ask questions or help clarify my article below in the comment thread.
